Frustrated by what he calls a "lack of leadership" from Washington, Congressional candidate Corning Mayor Tom Reed today pledged to focus on creating family-sustaining career opportunities for young people in Western New York.

"As I listen to people around Western New York I hear repeatedly that the current leadership has forgotten that we need long-term leadership to stop the so-called 'Brain drain' as our children leave home because of lack of opportunity," Reed said. "The tax and borrow mentality we see in Washington and Albany has to stop. Just in 2009 alone, we have seen historic record-level borrowing."

Reed further noted that in his announcement for re-election, Congressman Eric J.J. Massa said "Hell No!" with regard to whether we should stop borrowing and give back unallocated stimulus money.

"This is not about Tom Reed, it's about our children and grandchildren," Reed commented. "That's why I am running. The borrowing on the backs of future generations is killing businesses and we have to learn to live within our means."

Reed cited the 29th District's abundant natural resources, energy sources (wind, natural gas, biomass), world class education facilities, improving interstate and rail infrastructure, and favorable geographic location as a crossroads between the Northeast, the Midwest, the Mid-Atlantic, and Canada as reasons why Western New York can see a recovery, "If government can get out the way."

"We will bring higher education leaders, industrial leaders, and technology leaders together in direct communication with government and create incentives for utilizing technologies with proven success," Reed said. "We can find long-term solutions to the challenges of creating new careers in Western New York instead of offering short-term cash grabs."

"Eric Massa and our leaders in Washington are focused on short-term preservation," Reed said. "I will be a leader for western New York. People believe that we have long term potential job growth. Our campaign is gaining traction because people see the potential."
