Congressman Massa Calls for Medicare Access for "Every American"
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Saying that he "will not go quietly into the night," Congressman Eric Massa told a meeting of the Single Payer Now! organization that he was issuing a "call to action" to continue the fight for single-payer health care in the United States. Massa's call came during an appearance he made at the organization's meeting this past Saturday in San Francisco.
Massa told the crowd that he would not give up the fight until there was "access to Medicare for every single American" even though he was being "excoriated" in his district. Massa also reaffirmed that he would not support any health care legislation that did not include a "robust public option." Massa was applauded at the meeting for sponsoring HR 676, which would outlaw private health insurance, except for cosmetic surgery and such procedures.
Challenger Tom Reed reacted to Massa's speech by repeating his opposition to government run healthcare. "Eric Massa's votes on last week's appropriations bills continue to pile hundreds of billions of dollars of debt onto the backs of our children and grandchildren," Reed said. "Medicare is clearly broken and going bankrupt and now he wants all Americans on Medicare?"
"This is just another example of how Eric Massa is completely out of touch with his constituents," Reed observed. "I repeatedly hear opposition to government run health care from people across Western New York. For Congressman Massa to issue a call to action to make this happen is directly opposed to the will of the people of the 29th district."
