Reed Joins Fellow Challengers in Pledge to Support Basic Reforms
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Tom Reed this morning announced that he has joined a group of reform-minded Congressional
candidates called the “Freshman 50”. The non-partisan group is dedicated to fiscal and legislative
responsibility. Its members are pledged to a simple platform of six reforms including:
1) Applying the Law Equally: All laws that apply to all citizens also apply to Congress.
2) Term Limits: Limit terms in Congress to no more than 12 years in the House and Senate,
respectively.
3) Enforcing Congressional Ethics: Yearly tax and expense audits, former Congressmen and their
staff cannot be lobbyists, allow the ethics committee to do their job.
4) Reading Bills Publicly: Prior to final vote, the entire bill must be read out loud on the floor of
the House.
5) Tax Reform: Repeal our current tax code in favor of one that taxes only once, at one rate, and
require a 2/3-majority vote for any new tax.
6) Balancing the Budget: Amend the Constitution to require a balanced budget.
“This is an ambitious list of reforms,” Reed said of the commitment he is making. “Some of them will
require a phased approach to get to the goal. But these are basic reforms that will return Congress to
more citizen control and turn Congress more toward what the founders of our nation envisioned.”
“People need to know what candidates stand for,” Reed commented. “These six basic principles provide
a pretty accurate description of my approach to government. Fifty new members of Congress committed
to these principles can accomplish great things for our nation.”
Brian Miller, an Air Force veteran and candidate for Congress in Arizona’s 8th District founded The
Freshmen 50 in early 2009.
