Reed signs anti-SAFE Act pledge

Posted: February 25, 2014

OVID — Rep. Tom Reed on Sunday became the first 2014 New York state candidate to sign an anti-SAFE Act pledge.

The Shooters Committee on Political Action (SCOPE) prepared the pledge, which Reed signed after addressing the United Gun Owners of New York at the South Seneca Sportsmen’s Club.

The pledge calls for the repeal of the SAFE Act, a New York state gun control bill passed after the school shooting in Newtown, Conn. It also commits Reed, R-23 of Corning, to oppose similar legislation at the federal level.

Reed is running for re-election this year, with Martha Robertson, a Tompkins County legislator, as his likely Democratic opponent. Reed spokeswoman Katherine Pudwill sees the pledge as a campaign issue.

“As a lifelong hunter and sportsman, Tom’s views on the Second Amendment are very clear,” Pudwill said in a press release. “Since he took the oath of office he has worked to ensure that the constitutional freedoms of our friends and neighbors in the Southern Tier are never compromised. In contrast, Martha Robertson voted in support of the SAFE Act and served as chair of the only county legislature in upstate New York that has yet to oppose the legislation. It’s no wonder she’s getting thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from anti-Second Amendment extremists like Nancy Pelosi. We call on Martha Robertson to sign the pledge today.”
